Beginning in November, all 5th grade students in Grand Rapids Public Schools will be reading this book and blogging about their reading experience. There will be questions posed to the students, posts written and shared from different classrooms and four "Great Days of Blogging". The final celebration will be held with a visit from the author in March 2016.

Emerging Themes
GREAT DAY OF BLOGGING! What themes are emerging in Esperanza Rising?
Hi Lizzy its Tanazya and i'm trying to figure out what you mean about "hard working pays off" do you mean that about when Esperanza work hard and telling her mom before she left that she love her and that she got a job and willing to pay the bills for mama From Campus Elementary
some things are just not supposed to be there like when tio Luis tried to be in papa's place an that is his brother an as that came up to him he has been tricked he didn't need to be mama's husband to rule over the ranch
The one theme I noticed is that the uncles are trying to take all the money from Esperanza's family and the uncles are big jerks.Also I noticed in the book it said that Tio Luis was wearing the belt buckle and things are getting different.
My theme was Wrong VS Right.I think it's wrong because, how can a brother marry his brother wife,it's crazy.That's why is right to the uncle to keep the ranch.But,wait how can the uncle take a house from a good,nice wife in charge of the house.But,it's wrong he takes the house from them. The one theme I noticed was power because the goat Tio Luis is trying to get the land and he tried to marry Mama so that maybe he can steel things when they go to bed and try to take the house and he is trying to get the power from the Mom and Abuelita so that they won't have a house to live in. One theme I noticed is wrong and right because Tio Luis is forcing Esperanza's mom to marry her but she chose the right choice and she said NO, because that was very wrong and that was her dads brother and their family didn't think that was right and so did Esperanza's mom. One theme I noticed in the book poor people and rich because poor people can't marry rich and rich people can't marry poor people.Like Esperanza can't marry Miguel,because poor people marry poor people and rich people marry rich people.
One of the themes is power.A person who has power is Tio Luis. When papa got killed the land was left to him. The house was not ,so he wrote an amount of money on a piece of paper moma said"were will we live?" Tio Luis asked to marry mama but she rejected him .Tio Luis wanted to marry moma to run for governor. "He will get respect if they were married". He threatens moma by saying"you'll regret your decision Ramona ,you must keep in mine this house and those grapes are my property" he said. La'Rissa Sherwood Mrs. Thayer
I noticed that the uncle/goat is trying to take over papa's ranch and the house,but the uncle said "If you won't marry me than I will make your life difficult "that what the uncle said to mama .The uncle also said "I'm running for goverment" I means to be away from each other,and can't cross it mean we can't get back together Angel

Hey it's Aniya from campus mrs.Toronto I really agree with you family does matter and through out the story esperanza is losing a lot of family the ones that matter most and esperanza was NOT expeting for her papa to die and now her mama is so close and a great theme for this story is things are coming your way whether is good great or bad
Hi I think the theme is for Esperanza Rising is so far from chapter 12 is scary because mama has pneumonia and papa died and abuelita is sick and Esperanza said i don't want to lose mama like she lost papa because he died and abuelita is still in Mexico. Do you think mama will die just lie papa?

I think people make sacrifices because they have to start over and let go because they can't hold on anymore, so they have to move on like Esperanza and her family did.
