Beginning in November, all 5th grade students in Grand Rapids Public Schools will be reading this book and blogging about their reading experience. There will be questions posed to the students, posts written and shared from different classrooms and four "Great Days of Blogging". The final celebration will be held with a visit from the author in March 2016.

Metaphor
What is the meaning of the following metaphor? What is being compared? Would she [Esperanza] ever escape this valley she was living in? This valley of Mama being sick?
No I don't think that Esperanza will escape the valley of Mama being sick because the doctor said "If you survive". So no i don't think she will escape. Myaja Sherwood Mrs.Thayer
I think it means that every issue mama has it will effect Esperanza everywhere she goes and I think she will be able to escape. This is Alex Diaz from Dickinson School
