Good Morning! In the book, Esperanza Rising, people are making a lot of sacrifices.
Why do you think people make sacrifices for others?
Beginning in November, all 5th grade students in Grand Rapids Public Schools will be reading this book and blogging about their reading experience. There will be questions posed to the students, posts written and shared from different classrooms and four "Great Days of Blogging". The final celebration will be held with a visit from the author in March 2016.

How are details used to form the rising action of the plot?
Find three connected details and explain how they are part of a rising action in the story. Does this help you predict some choices Esperanza and her mother will have to make later in the story?

Pricked by a Thorn (superstition)
What thoughts come to Esperanza after she pricks her finger on a thorn? What purpose may the author have to write about this superstition? Can you find research about this superstition to give you more information?

Hello Family,
In my class we have been loving the book Esperanza. We already have so many questions and have made so many connections. My class has been working on summarizing what we read and using evidence from the story to support how we feel or think. Here is our first question we wrote about.
Question: Describe Esperanza's relationship with her father.
Answer: Esperanza's relationship with her papa is very close and caring. On page four of the book it describes Esperanza as the only child and Papa's pride and glory. The book goes on to say that he never disappoints her. They did many things together and seemed to support each other. Esperanza look up to both of her parents and watched her father closely as described on page one. Are there other ways that you can describe the relationship between Esperanza and her Papa? Can you find other pages in the book that describe their relationship?
