  1. Esperanza changes throughout the story by doing things that she does not like to do ,but now she has to do it.She is learning how Americans are beings sent back to mexico and there not even from Mexico. She is also learning how servants live. She is also learning that she has to so chores instead of having servants. She is learning that she is not wealthy and she is poor now.She is also learning that family is more important than her wanting to be rich again.

  4. I think that Esperanza lesson is that she can take care of her self. And that she can learn lots of things like if you still have papers you still get deported.Another one is that Esperanza and she was rich before and now she needs to work to get money so she gets her grandma to her a faster way.Another one is that she now knows that you can get deported if you do not have papers and that she knows that she haves worker hands.

  5. Esperanza changed by since she is not rich anymore so now she has to adapt to her new life to not being rich anymore. Also because she now has to do things that she had Hortensia do like wash, clean, cook. But now she got used to it now that she is fine and she is now working. She is developing by raising money to pay the bills. Her development is changing the theme by like how in the beginning she was rich but now she is not so that sort of changes the theme. Also Esperanza changed throughout the story by working and getting used to work like servants. That is what i think.

  6. Esperazas lesson is through the story she learned how to clean and change dippers. Also she learned how to take care of herself like she's working for money in the field. And she is learning a lot of things. Also she changed by caring for people like she gave the kids a pinata that was supposed to be for her mom.And she could get deported and put something in her hands.

  7. I think Esperanza's lesson was to be kind and don't judge people if they are poor because in the story Esperanza took the doll out of a little girl hand then mama made a doll but...now she know how it is to be poor and maybe if she ran back in to her again Esperanza would say sorry I didn't know how dirty working is so please accept my sorry I work really hard now for mony for my mama she is very sick

  8. Esperanza has changed a lot because she is not rich anymore there are no servants and she has to do everything now. Esperanza also changed because she used to have very soft hands and now she has worker hands. One main theme is when Esperanza gave the the pinata to the little kids at Marta's camp . Esperanza wasn't selfish she thought about others and how they felt.Another theme is when Mama gave the little girl a doll that Esperanza had Mama also wasn't selfish she also cared about others.

  9. Esperanza changes greatly throughout the story because she is learning to except that she is not rich any more and they are now poor. Also she is learning to work in the sheds and doing chores ,and she has learned not to hold grudges because she knew what it felt like to not be with your mom so she helped Marta stay with her mom.She has also learned not to be selfish because she helped the two little kids by giving them the pinata that she could have had fun with it but they needed it more then she did.

  27. At first when papa was there she was all happy and then when papa died she was all Sad and worried because she only had a little bit of her family alive and Esperanza had another situation when mama was very sick and in the hospital and before papa died she had a home and then they lost their house because they couldn't afford it and then she even had a lot of Dresses and stuff but when her mama and papa were sick she just immediately changed into a different person.

  29. Esperanza change throughout the story because on her other house in Mexico she was nice and helpful and now she’s kinda mean and she wants everything perfect like Miguel not getting a job Esperanza stude out and said,’’why didn't you said something,’’. Now she changed a lot than back then.

  30. Esperanza has changed throughout the whole story because I noticed in the beginning of Esperanza Rising she thought as herself that she was a boss or like a queen. Now that Tio Luis has set their ranch on fire in Mexico,Aguascalientes they had nothing so they went to the United States to have a better life. BUt their homeless they just live in a cabin (horse stall). And Esperanza thought she was still a queen but Miguel told her “and you think you are still a queen”. Then Esperanza thought to herself I am not a queen.

  31. At first Esperanza was hopeful kind yet a little selfish and didn't know how to do much and was sad for her papa. In the second part she was more selfish and guilty. In the third part she is hardworking and is scared for her mother and even though she is poor she knows she has a very good life.

  32. When I was reading the story I noticed that in the beginning she was happy, selfish, also Tio Louis tried to marry Mama and Esperanza and Miguel had to move to move to America because of Tio louis. In the middle I noticed that on there way to America Esperanza and Miguel had to ride a train but it was a bad train ride. The last thing I Noticed is Mma was sick and dying Mama was gone for 5 whole months then when Mama came back to the house with Esperanza Miguel left the house and took Mama’s money.

  33. In the beginning Esperanza always thought everything would be amazing and perfect. She expected her life to be a straight line and never had to do anything for herself. Towards the middle she did not want to come to terms with her new life and did not want to live it because she knew it would be awful. At the end Esperanza knows this is her life and it may never change and she is OK with that.

  34. In the beginning of the story Esperanza was a ranch owner’s daughter on El Rancho De Las Rosas and she had everything she ever wanted. She did not need to clean,to cook, to even work. She had everything done for her. Sadly her Papa had died change her life drastically. After that her life became harder than ever. In the middle of the story Esperanza was pressured by the idea of taking care of the babies while Isabel was at school. Esperanza did not know how to cook, clean or how to change diapers, or even sweep. Now Esperanza knows how to do those things and more. She is now paying the medical bills for Mama and saving up so that Abuelita can come to the U.S. That is how Esperanza has changed throughout the story.

  35. Esperanza has changed throughout the story because in the beginning she was happy and was able to get what she wanted. In the middle of the story, Esperanza is on a train and this little poor girl saw the doll Esperanza had and the girl wants it and Esperanza is greedy with the doll. Later in the story, Esperanza finds out that Mama is sick. This makes Esperanza worry and care about Mama. Soon, Marta asks Esperanza a favor. Esperanza is caring about people and helps others. A big difference in Esperanza is from greedy and rude to helpful, caring and sharing.

  36. At the beginning of Esperanza Rising I noticed Esperanza was happy and she was spoiled didn’t ever sweep or nothing then when papa, died Esperanza fell apart. And then Mama, caught a sand disease then Miguel left. Also Abuelita was far away so she kinda felt lonely then Miguel took Mama’s money. So now she’s said Abuelita can’t get there.

  38. Esperanza changed a lot over the time of us reading Esperanza Rising. She used to be pampered almost all her life! Esperanza always thought she was a perfect girl in Mexico. Someone would help her to do everything. When Papa died she was really sad and didn't know what to do. She was depressed. Than she had to move to the U.S and leave Abuelita in Mexico. While she was at the camp with Mama and everyone else, she learned a lot of things that she would not of learned if she stayed in Mexico with all her servants. She learned how to sweep the floor, take care of babies and wash clothes. Esperanza learned how to pack asparagus and sort out peaches. Esperanza became stronger and more observant of the world and of her emotions after Papa's death. That is how Esperanza changed over the chapters in Esperanza Rising.

But then one day her papa died and her feeling really got hurt because her uncle tried to take over everything then she would always ask mama will we be alright. Then she moved to America and she hated it there because she had to learn how to sweep, how to change baby diapers and she didn’t like doing that because she didn’t know how.And her Mom when she was sick she was scared, but now she is home. And also the money orders are missing now and she is worry. And now she is poor and hates her life.

  43. Esperanza changed throughout the story by … in the beginning of the story she was kind generous and wealthy. Then her house burned down so her mom had to marry tio louis. The house could be repaired but Mama actually lied and she, Miguel, Alfanso, Hortensia, and Esperanza snuck away and went to California. Now they live in a valley and Esperanza and Mama became a peasant and learned that it’s not that bad to be a peasant. Now she is sometimes selfish and she is kind and knows how to sweep she’s also caring.

  47. Esperanza personality changes throughout the story because all of the things she is going through. In the beginning of the story Esperanza was sweet and loveable but, after her Papa died her mood went downhill from there she had lost everything then she had to move to the United States because her mother was being forced into marriage. After that she started being selfish on the train that she was on to go to the United States there was this little peasant girl and she was touching Esperanza’s porcelain doll and Esperanza and she snatched it away from the little girl and made her cry. Now that Esperanza has been living a life of a peasant her personality has been happy and she has been on her A game she has been paying Mama’s medical bills and taking care of the babies and sending Isabelle off to school every day now Esperanza is kind and generous.

  51. Esperanza chances because at the beginning of the store she was happy because the next day it was her birthday. After she was happy she was nervous because papa was not back and the sun already was down then she was sad because papa was dead then her house got burned down and she thought it was tio luis so she was angry at tio luis and depressed because her house burned down and she left her home where she grew up she also left abuelita and mexico to live in the u.s. for a better life. Then when they got to the camp and found out where they were living Esperanza was disscusted because she thought she was still better than everyone she know and she deserved better. After that she was a little confused because it was the first time changing babies, doing the laundry, and other stuff then she was happy that she know how to do it. Then when mama go sick she was worried and sad. When she started working she happy because she wanted to get money to get abuelita to the u.s. because Esperanza thought if abuelita was there mama would be better. 52. Esperanza changed throughout the story because starting of Esperanza Rising story she was rich until tio Luis tells Ramona that you are going to marry me. At the beginning Esperanza was rich and clean the first time we met her and she was with her Papa when she was younger Esperanza and her Papa was so close and they was picking grapes in the vineyard together and she loved to hold her Papa hands as they walk through the vineyard. And Papa and Esperanza would both like to lay on the ground to listen to the heartbeat of the earth (the sound of the Earth like the motion)but now Esperanza is poor and dirty and she have to work on fields with cotton and people don't like her now and she lost her Papa now her Mama is feeling good but she was not at first and she don't have any more money because of Miguel took it the thing is she use to like Miguel she still do but not that much because they had an argument with him and she still know how to act with other people Esperanza tries to be nice but she can't because other people just don't be nice back oh sorry for saying everyone don't like Mexicans it’s one person that thinks the Mexicans are nice that is the other people at the camp and her life is falling apart like with Miguel and Papa and Abuelita and she almost lost her Mama.

  54. RICHES TO RAGS
Throughout the story Esperanza changed . She changed when she moved because she had to become more responsible. For example it says in the text that at first she was living in a beautiful mansion in Mexico where she had servants to do things for her. Some things they did for her are they cleaned up after her, they dressed her and she had all these beautiful dresses. When she moved to the United States things changed. For example she did not have nice dresses, she had to clean up after herself, she wore shirts for dresses but they were too big for her.

  55. Esperanza has been changing a lot in the story .Here are some parts in the story that I pointed out. The first one which is pretty straight forward, is when Esperanza changed from Riches to Rags. Another one I've pointed out is when Esperanza was living in this wonderful house and it was really big and she had everything she ever dreamed of having. She had people working for her .She didn't have to worry about a thing until a big change which was Esperanza 's house caught on fire . This is on page 39 and 40 . She lost everything. Now she has to face living in a shed with no one to provide for her.

  56. Esperanza changes in the story and this is how she did. . . First Esperanza did not know how to use a broom but who could blame her? She had servants to do it for her. When she got to the United States she had to learn how to use a broom. You can see this on pages 115-119 it says " Miguel told her to pay attention and he showed her how to hold a broom like this and then you push like this or pull it toward you like this " . . . And that's how Esperanza went from Riches to Rags.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Esperanza changed throughout the story because at first she lived in this huge, beautiful house without many responsibilities, and without having to clean one single time. That was also when Esperanza thought that she and Miguel were on two separate sides of the river. Now she lives in a crowded little cabin with many responsibilities. Now Esperanza has to learn how to clean and now Esperanza thinks that she and Miguel are on the same side of the river. You can see this on pages9 and 141. Esperanza's development reflects on the main theme because this information shows that she went from riches to rags.

  58. Esperanza changed throughout the story because...
First, she lived in this big house what sounds like to me a palace, with no responsibilities. Next, when Tio Luis and Tio Marco set their house on fire all her things were burnt, which changes her lifestyle. She came from riches to rags. When Papa died she became mean. For example, when she,Mama,Alfonso,Hortensia, and Miguel were on the train with peasants, she had a doll that Papa bought for her birthday. When she had her doll out a little girl with a dirty face had tried to take it from Esperanza, but Esperanza didn't let her. She got nicer while she spent time with Isabel,by giving her the doll Papa had given her. I got this information on pages,193-198. She gave Isabel the doll on page,227.

  59. Esperanza changed throughout the story by having a big house, and a lot of dresses to a little cabin and torn up dresses. When she was rich she didn't do any work. When she was poor she had to clean herself, cook, and take care of the baby. This shows how she went from Riches to Rags .

    ReplyDelete
  60. Esperanza changed because she is not rich anymore. She used to have a fancy home filled with servants but her house burned down to the ground, and her father died . They think the two uncles have something to do with it.So Esperanza and her family had to move to a place where they have to work to earn money. So she became mean because she is sad that she is not rich anymore and that her father is dead. The theme Riches to Rags is shown throughout the story.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Esperanza has changed throughout the story by riches at first until Tio Luis killed papa and burned the house then she went to rags. But when her family moved to the United States stuff had started to change in her life and in the text she had to start sweeping and take care of Lupe and Pepe and herself and mama. That's when the theme became "Riches and Rags".

    ReplyDelete
  62. At the beginning of the story Esperanza had servants to cook and clean but now since Esperanza is not wealthy any more, she has to learn how to cook and clean herself. I say this because in the text she had to learn how to sweep because she was use to her servants cleaning up for her. Esperanza also had to learn how to cook for herself. I say this because Esperanza just laid back and made her servants clean and cook for her so she really didn't have many responsibilities as a rich girl, but now since she is now poor she has a lot of jobs to do.I say this because in the text it said that she had to work with the migrant workers. Esperanza also had to work with the potatoes at the camp. Her changes were from Riches to Rags .

  63. At the beginning Esperanza was rich and had a lot of great clothes that
she loved and soon everything changed.Soon she started to act mean and
vicious, because she started to go from riches to rags. But soon Esperanza
pulled herself together and she took care of the people that were most important to her.So that's how she got from riches to rags.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Esperanza went from riches to rags. Esperanza changed throughout the story a lot. One of the big things that changed was that she had to earn everything and she wasn't given a lot of things. When Esperanza was rich she had everything given to her. Now she had to work and earn money to get things she needed. She had to start working because she had to save up money to get Abuelita to come to America to take care of Mama. In Los Aguacates [Avocados] Esperanza worked and she had enough money to send Abuelita a money order to try to come to America. Esperanza worked and she didn't beg or ask for money she was responsible and she earned it herself.

    ReplyDelete
  65. To me Esperanza changes throughout the story, and I will show you that. In the text Esperanza changes when she was on the bus of the poor people or as they said in the story the bus of rags. She changed because when the little girl wanted to see her doll she got for her birthday she didn't want her touching it with her dirty hands, but after she started to be a little more friendly and less selfish and gave the little girl a yarn doll that she made to be nice.
Another part in the text where Esperanza changed was when she was still rich and she had servants that used to do everything for her like sweep her room for her, clean her, and cook food for her, but once she became poor she learned how to sweep, cook, and clean herself. I'm going to tell two more ways Esperanza changed. The first one is that she used to live in a nice, lovely ,big house with all the money she could ever need. When they became poor they had to live in small cabins and work for their money. Last, another change was that in the beginning of the story Esperanza had her papa right by her side, but sadly later in the story her papa had died. If I had to describe Esperanza I would say that she really improved herself while she went from riches to rags.

  66. Esperanza has changed a lot throughout the story. Here are some examples on how she has changed. At first she lived in a huge house with many servants, but now she lives in a tiny cabin with no servants at all.She didn't have to do anything at first. Now she has to do all kinds of things like taking care of the babies, working in the sheds, cooking, and cleaning all of these things are listed in the story. Esperanza's development reflects the main theme because this information shows that she went from Riches to Rags.

  67. Esperanza has changed a lot through out the story as she went from riches to rags. For example at the beginning of the story Esperanza was rich and all happy. She had nice dresses, shoes,a nice home, and a nice attitude. Then, her papa died, and her house caught on fire. Her family lost all of their money and became peasants. On the train ride to America a little dirty girl wanted to see Esperanza's doll that her papa had given her.Esperanza yanked it back and put it back in her valise. Then later in the book she was nice again. On page 227 it says, Esperanza reached for her valise, and opened it.Although it was a little dusty, the doll still looked lovely. She lifted the doll from her valise and handed it to Isabel. She became a nicer person as she went from riches to rags

    ReplyDelete
  68. In the beginning of the book she didn't know how to do much but in middle and the end of the book, she had to learn how to take care of the babies. I know this because the first time she watched the babies they got sick. Then she got better at watching them. Going from richest to rags for a example, Esperanza had to get jobs because she was not rich anymore. I know this because in the story she did not know how to clean herself then she learned.

  69. Esperanza changed because she went from riches to rags. Esperanza used to live in a nice home filled with servants, but her house got burned down. Esperanza and mama say the uncles did it.So the Esperanza family h moved so they could work and get money. The theme was all about Esperanza going from riches to rags.

  70. Esperanza changes throughout the story because at first she had a big and beautiful house, and she didn't have many responsibilities. Esperanza didn't have to clean a single time. Now Esperanza lives in a crowded cabin and has many responsibilities, like when she had to take care of Pepe and Lupe, and she also had to learn how to cook and sweep. You can see this on pages 107-111. Esperanza's development reflects the main theme because this information shows that she went from Riches to Rags.

  71. Esperanza changed throughout the story because...
First,Esperanza was nice and was happy.I got this evidence through pages, 1-21.She was nice and caring to the earth because Papa was with her at the valley to hear the valley's heartbeat. As she got older her Papa died and she became mean. Then Tio Luis and Tio Marco burned down her house and asked Mama if he could marry her Mama said yes and tricked them and they moved away from them. They chose to go away and go from Riches to Rags!!From Mulick Park Teacher. Mrs.Metcalf

  72. At the beginning of the story Esperanza is a little mean, but in the middle of the text she is a little nicer. I think she is nicer because she saw how the conditions are in the camp where she is living in. and how people are living, and how much money people are working for so she wants to help them out, but she also has to help herself and her family.

  73. At the beginning, Esperanza is a little bit naive. She doesn't fully understand what it's like to be without a wealthy family! As Esperanza experiences a life of poverty, she is struck by what she did not know, so she loses her confidence.

Esperanza has had to change hew way of thinking. Before when she was young and lived with a rich family she didn't understand poor people. Now she has to live in poverty. She does her own chores without servants. She has to live differently and doesn't have nice things. This has made her more understanding of poor people. She is nicer!

Esperanza changed because she had to do chores and use to have servants. She isn't rich anymore but has become nicer now. She talks better to her mother and is starting to be better with other people too.

  78. I mostly relate to the theme of perseverance because when my mom had a baby I had to take care of my baby sister ,and sometimes even feed her because my mom was sick.
Kind of like Esperanza she had to take care of the babies while Isabel was at school ,and when Mama was in the hospital Esperanza needed to persevere working in order to take care of the family.
While I took care of the baby I learned how to feed my baby sister and do other things like take care of my baby sister , play with her and sleep her.
Esperanza learned how to take care of the babies, and she also learned how to work.

  88. I think Esperanza had hope because she put an effort into everything she did. She always had perseverance to do what she had to do. This gave her hope. I had a time when things got bad, but there was always hope to make everything better. Everything in my life got better just like Eperanza's.
